XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars — XAU being the ISO 4217 code for gold, XAG for silver. It is the international spot benchmark the whole trade quotes from, and every other figure on this site is derived from it: the board above converts it into your own market's currency and unit, and the Indian retail rates on the gold rate today in India pages carry import duty and a trade premium on top of it. Prices come from international spot quotes and published currency reference rates — the complete derivation is public, down to the duty rate and the date it was last checked. XAU Ticker is an independent, ad-free price board; who publishes it and how it is funded is on the record too.
How to read this board
Bid is what a buyer is offering, ask is what a seller wants, and the gap between them is the spread — the dealer's turn, and the reason you can never both buy and sell at the same number. The session range is the low and high we have observed since the market rolled over at 22:00 UTC, and change is measured against the previous session's close, not against midnight. A range only appears once we have seen at least two quotes that actually differ; before that it shows a dash rather than a fake range of zero.
What the freshness label means
Precious-metals markets close at the weekend. Rather than present a stale figure as a live one, this site labels itself LIVE when the quote is under 15 minutes old, CLOSED when the market is shut and the figure is the last close of the session that ended, DELAYED when the market is open but our intraday source is not answering, and NO DATA if every source fails — in which case the figures shown are placeholders and should not be used.
Indian rates exclude GST
As is standard for Indian rate boards, the headline rupee figures are ex-GST. A real purchase adds 3% GST on the metal value plus making charges, and making charges are set by each jeweller. The gold jewellery price calculator with GST applies both, so it gets far closer to a counter total than a headline rate can. See the risk disclaimer for why a shop price will differ.
Choosing your market
Market is a separate choice from language, because English is spoken in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Emirates — four different markets in four currencies. Your market is picked from your browser's own locale on a first visit and you can change it at any time; the choice is stored in your browser and never sent to us. Note that Indian figures include import duty and a trade premium, while other markets show a wholesale spot conversion that no dealer will sell at.
Gold rate by city
City rates are an Indian convention — local bullion associations publish their own daily figures, which is why Chennai differs from Mumbai. Gold rate today in India compares every city we cover side by side in 24K and 22K per 10 g, and each city page carries the local market context and the regional adjustment applied to it: Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. These differentials are modelled rather than surveyed, which is stated openly.
Common questions
What does XAU/USD mean?
XAU is the ISO 4217 code for one troy ounce of gold, XAG for silver. XAU/USD is the price of that ounce in US dollars — the international spot quote every other figure here is derived from, including the rupee, pound, euro, dirham and peso rates.
What is the spot price of gold?
The price for immediate wholesale delivery of unfabricated metal, quoted per troy ounce in dollars and traded continuously from Sunday 22:00 UTC to Friday 21:00 UTC. It is a benchmark, not a shop price: a dealer sells above it and buys below it, and a jeweller adds making charges and tax on top.
Where do these rates come from?
International spot quotes in US dollars per troy ounce, converted at the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. Rupee retail figures additionally carry India's import duty and a flat trade premium. Every source is credited on the methodology page.
What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold?
24K is 99.9% pure gold, hallmarked 999, used for coins and bars. 22K is 91.6% pure, hallmarked 916, and is what almost all Indian jewellery is made from. The 22K rate is exactly 22/24 of the 24K rate before any making charges.
Why is my jeweller's price higher?
A counter price includes making charges, wastage, hallmarking fees, local demand and the jeweller's margin, with GST on top of all of it. A gap of several percent against a published metal rate is normal and does not mean either figure is wrong.
How often do rates update?
Spot is polled every minute while markets are open. Currency rates come from the ECB and change once per working day, so rupee and euro figures track the dollar price intraday while holding the exchange rate fixed until the next publication.
Can I use these rates for a contract or valuation?
No. These are indicative figures, not an official benchmark or fixing. Where a contract calls for a specific benchmark, use that benchmark from its official source. See the risk disclaimer.
