This is the national base rate: the figure before any city adjustment is applied. Mumbai and Kolkata carry no adjustment on our model, so their rate is this rate.

Gold rate today by city

Every city we cover, cheapest first, in the two purities Indian jewellery is actually sold in. The last column is the regional adjustment applied to the national base above — modelled, not surveyed.

How India quotes gold

Per 10 grams. The traditional unit was the tola, standardised at 11.6638 grams under British rule. India went metric in the 1960s and the bullion trade moved to the nearest round equivalent — 10 grams — which is what every Indian rate board has quoted since. International markets quote per troy ounce, 31.1034768 grams, which is why the conversion is never a round number.

916 means 22K. The hallmark number is parts of gold per thousand: 999 for 24K, 916 for 22K (22 ÷ 24 = 91.6%), 750 for 18K. BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India — look for the BIS mark, the purity grade and the six-digit HUID before paying. 22K is the standard for Indian jewellery; 24K is too soft for it and is bought as coins and bars.

Import duty of 6%. India imports almost all of its gold, and the July 2024 Union Budget cut the customs duty to 6% (5% basic customs duty + 1% AIDC). That duty is inside the rates on this page, because it is inside the price a shop pays for its metal.

GST of 3% is not. Indian rate boards quote ex-GST by convention and so do we. It is charged on the metal value plus making charges at the point of purchase, and the gold jewellery price calculator with GST applies both so you can see a realistic counter total instead of a metal rate.

Why city rates differ

Metal lands on the west coast, clears 6% import duty, and is then moved inland — so cities further from the import point, or with stronger local demand, sit above the Mumbai level. We model that as a fixed regional adjustment per city, which is stated openly on each page and on the methodology page.

CityRegionPrincipal bullion market
Mumbai Maharashtra Zaveri Bazaar, Bhuleshwar
Delhi Delhi NCR Kucha Mahajani, Chandni Chowk
Chennai Tamil Nadu T. Nagar and NSC Bose Road
Kolkata West Bengal Bowbazar and Bara Bazar
A limitation worth knowing

These regional adjustments are modelled, not surveyed. We do not collect quotes from local bullion associations, so our figure for a city is not that city's association rate. See the limitations section.

Frequently asked questions

Which city has the cheapest gold in India?

On our model Mumbai and Kolkata sit at the national base rate, and Chennai is the dearest of the cities we cover at about 1.1% above it. Mumbai is where imported bullion lands and where the wholesale market clears, so it is the floor the others are quoted against. The spread between cheapest and dearest is around one percent — smaller than the difference in making charges between two jewellers on the same street.

Why is the gold rate in Chennai higher than in Mumbai?

Chennai is a long way from the western import points, so the metal carries the cost of moving inland, and Tamil Nadu's jewellery demand is strong and weighted to 22K. Local associations there have historically quoted above the Mumbai level. We model that as a fixed adjustment of about 1.1% — an estimate, not a surveyed association rate.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Usually yes on the metal alone: India charges 6% import duty and 3% GST on a purchase, while the UAE zero-rates investment-grade metal for VAT and charges 5% only on jewellery. The saving is real but narrower than the headline gap once making charges, the dealer's own premium and the customs allowance on the way home are counted. The live board quotes the Emirates market in dirhams per gram if you want to compare the two directly.

Does this rate include GST?

No. Like Indian rate boards generally, our headline figure is ex-GST. You pay an additional 3% on the metal value plus making charges when you buy.
