How this rate is worked out
We start from the international spot price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce, convert it to rupees per gram at the European Central Bank's daily reference rate, add India's 6% import duty, and apply a flat trade premium. We apply a regional adjustment of +1.10% over Mumbai — the widest on this site, matching Chennai's persistently higher retail level.
Purities follow exact ratios: 22K is 22/24 of the 24K rate, 18K is 18/24. The methodology page gives every constant, the date it was last checked, and an explicit list of what this figure cannot tell you.
Our Chennai figure applies a fixed regional adjustment to a nationally derived rate. We do not survey local jewellers or publish any bullion association's rate. Treat it as a well-documented reference level, and expect a counter price to differ. See the risk disclaimer.
The Chennai market
Chennai consistently runs the highest gold rates of the major Indian metros. Tamil Nadu is one of the country's strongest gold-consuming states, and sustained retail demand keeps the local premium wider than in the north or west.
T. Nagar — Usman Road and Panagal Park — is one of the highest-turnover retail jewellery districts anywhere in India, anchored by very large showrooms. NSC Bose Road in George Town handles the wholesale and bullion trade.
Chennai jewellers usually quote per gram rather than per 10 grams, and 22K is the default for jewellery rather than 24K. We show both units and all three purities so the comparison is direct.
24K, 22K and 18K — which one applies to you
| Karat | Hallmark | Purity | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 | 99.9% | Coins, bars, investment metal. Too soft for most jewellery. |
| 22K | 916 | 91.6% | The standard for Indian gold jewellery. |
| 18K | 750 | 75.0% | Diamond settings and contemporary designs; harder and more durable. |
Hallmarking by BIS is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India. Check for the BIS mark, the purity grade and the six-digit HUID before you pay.
What you will actually pay in a shop
The rate above is the metal only. A real invoice in Chennai adds two things it cannot include:
- Making charges — the jeweller's fee for turning metal into a piece. Set per item and per jeweller, and negotiable in many shops.
- 3% GST — charged on the metal value plus making charges, not on the metal alone.
Our on-site calculator applies both, so it lands much closer to a counter total than the headline rate does. Enter the weight and purity of a piece and it will break the total into metal, making and tax.
Frequently asked questions
Why is gold more expensive in Chennai than in Mumbai or Delhi?
Tamil Nadu has exceptionally high and steady jewellery demand, and the local trade sustains a wider premium over landed cost as a result. Transport from the western import points adds to it.
Chennai jewellers quote per gram — how do I compare with a per-10-gram rate?
Divide by ten. A rate of ₹1,45,000 per 10 grams is ₹14,500 per gram. The widget above shows both so you do not have to.
Should I look at the 22K or the 24K rate?
For jewellery, 22K (916 hallmark) — that is what almost all Indian ornaments are made from. 24K is for coins and bars. 22K is exactly 22/24 of the 24K rate before making charges.
Does the Chennai rate include the jeweller’s making charges?
No. Our figure is the metal rate only. Making charges and wastage in Chennai showrooms are often quoted as a percentage of metal value and can be substantial on traditional designs, and 3% GST applies on top of metal plus making.
