The rate above is the metal alone. A real bill adds the jeweller's making charges, and then 3% GST on the metal and the making charges together — the GST Council sets that rate; see the CBIC GST rate schedules.
Making charges are set by each jeweller — commonly 6–15% of metal value on machine-made pieces and higher on handwork — so nobody can put them in a rate board. Put yours into the calculator and it will break a total into metal, making and tax.

The same rate at the weights a purchase actually comes in. Every figure is the metal alone, ex-GST, derived from the per-gram rate in the card above — so these cannot drift away from the headline the way a hand-kept table would.

The Ahmedabad market
Ahmedabad is the principal bullion market of Gujarat, a state whose trade in precious stones and metals is among the largest in the country. It also sits close to the western coast, which is where India's imported gold arrives — so it carries about as little transport cost as any market outside Mumbai.
Manek Chowk, in the heart of the old city, is the historic jewellery market and still the centre of the trade — a square that deals in gold by day and turns into a street-food market at night, which is the detail every visitor remembers. Newer showrooms trade from the western side of the river.
Gujarat's precious-metals economy is unusually trade-oriented rather than purely retail: Surat, a few hours south, cuts a large share of the world's diamonds, and the state's bullion dealing is substantial in its own right. A buyer in Ahmedabad is closer to the wholesale end of the chain than in most Indian cities.
Gold-only movement, converted at today's INR rate
Ten daily closes per 10 grams, ex-GST. Read this as the movement in the metal: each past dollar close is converted at today's exchange rate, not at the rate that applied on the day, so the rupee column is not a record of what gold cost in Ahmedabad on those dates. Until we hold a daily USD/INR series, saying so is the honest version of this table.

How this rate is worked out
We start from the international spot price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce, convert it to rupees per gram at the European Central Bank's daily reference rate, add India's 15% import duty, and apply a flat trade premium. We apply a regional adjustment of +0.05% over Mumbai — very close to the base, because Gujarat is near the import points and its own trade is large enough to price keenly.
Purities follow exact ratios: 22K is 22/24 of the 24K rate, 18K is 18/24. The methodology page gives every constant, the date it was last checked, and an explicit list of what this figure cannot tell you.
Our Ahmedabad figure applies a fixed regional adjustment to a nationally derived rate. We do not survey local jewellers or publish any bullion association's rate. Treat it as a well-documented reference level, and expect a counter price to differ. See the risk disclaimer.
24K, 22K and 18K — which one applies to you
| Karat | Hallmark | Purity | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 | 99.9% | Coins, bars, investment metal. Too soft for most jewellery. |
| 22K | 916 | 91.6% | The standard for Indian gold jewellery. |
| 18K | 750 | 75.0% | Diamond settings and contemporary designs; harder and more durable. |
The hallmark number is the purity in parts per thousand, and each rate is an exact fraction of the 24K figure. 22K vs 24K gold and what 916 means covers the alloy, how to read a BIS hallmark and how to check one.
Duty, GST and hallmarking
Import duty of 15%. India imports almost all of its gold, and the customs duty on it is 15% (10% basic customs duty + 5% AIDC), administered by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. That duty is inside the rates on this page, because it is inside the price a shop pays for its metal.
GST of 3% is not. Indian rate boards quote ex-GST by convention and so do we. Gold and gold jewellery are taxed at 3% of the transaction value — see the CBIC GST rate schedules — and that value includes making charges, not just the metal. The jewellery price calculator applies both.
Hallmarking is mandatory. Gold jewellery sold in India must carry a BIS hallmark: the BIS mark, the purity grade (999, 916, 750) and a six-digit HUID. Check all three before paying, and see the BIS hallmarking FAQs for what each mark means and how to verify one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the gold rate in Ahmedabad close to the Mumbai rate?
Because Gujarat is close to where imported metal lands, and it has a large bullion trade of its own. There is little transport cost to add and enough local competition to keep the premium thin, so Ahmedabad sits barely above the Mumbai base on our model.
Where is the main gold market in Ahmedabad?
Manek Chowk in the old city, which has been the jewellery market for centuries and remains where the trade concentrates. It is also the city's best-known night food market, in the same square, after the jewellers close.
Is gold cheaper in Ahmedabad than in Bangalore or Chennai?
On our model, slightly — the southern markets carry wider regional premiums, while Ahmedabad sits near the base. The spread across every city we cover is around one percent, so the difference is real but small next to making charges.
Does this rate include GST?
No. Our headline figure is ex-GST, as Indian rate boards quote. GST of 3% applies to metal value plus making charges at purchase.
Silver rate in Ahmedabad
The silver figure in the card above is the national rate per kilogram, ex-GST — we apply the same regional adjustment to silver as to gold, and no city-specific silver survey sits behind it. Silver price today carries the ounce, gram and kilogram quotes, the ten-day board and the gold/silver ratio.
